Breast Lift vs. Breast Augmentation vs. Implants: What’s the Difference?

When it comes to improving the appearance of your breasts, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the options. Terms like breast implantsbreast lift, and breast augmentation are often used interchangeably, but they are distinct procedures, each designed to achieve different results.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more women than ever are exploring breast enhancement. Breast lift surgeries are now being performed twice as often as implant procedures, showing a shift in what many women are looking for.

At Mentor Plastic Surgery and MedSpa, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Vanek helps women understand these differences and choose the best option based on their goals, lifestyle, and body type. Let’s take a closer look at what sets each procedure apart.

Breast Augmentation: Boosting Volume and Shape

What is it?

Breast augmentation focuses on enhancing the size and fullness of your breasts, typically using silicone or saline implants. In some cases, fat transfer, which involves moving fat from another part of your body to the breasts, may also be utilized, though this is less common.

Who is it for?

This procedure is ideal for women who want larger breasts, more volume, or a more rounded shape. It’s also popular with patients who’ve experienced changes due to weight loss, aging, or pregnancy. To be eligible, patients must be in good health; saline implants are approved for women 18 and older, while silicone requires patients to be at least 22.

What results can you expect?

After augmentation, most women see a noticeable boost in volume and symmetry, with a rounder, fuller look. Many also find their clothes and bras fit better, and they experience a significant increase in self-confidence.

Breast Lift: Restoring Youthful Shape

What is it?

A breast lift—also known as mastopexy—doesn’t involve implants at all. Instead, it repositions and reshapes the natural breast tissue to correct sagging or drooping. It is an excellent option for women who want to improve the shape and perkiness of their breasts without increasing their size.

Who is it for?

If you’re happy with your current breast size but want to fix sagging or mild asymmetry, a breast lift might be the perfect solution. It’s especially popular among women who’ve gone through pregnancy or weight loss and want to restore a more youthful contour.

What are the results like?

This procedure delivers subtle, natural-looking results—firmer, perkier breasts without changing your cup size. However, if you’re looking to add upper fullness or increase your size, implants would be needed to achieve that.

Can You Combine a Breast Lift with Implants?

Many women, especially those who’ve had children, benefit from combining breast augmentation with a lift. The augmentation restores volume, while the lift repositions the breast tissue for a more youthful look.

Dr. Vanek often recommends this combination at Mentor Plastic Surgery and MedSpa for patients who want to improve their shape and size. It’s one of the most popular procedures among moms who’ve noticed changes in their breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

How should I prepare for Halo™ laser treatment?

What is Halo™ Laser Treatment?

Halo™ laser is a groundbreaking skin rejuvenation treatment that merges the strengths of ablative and non-ablative lasers in one session. Ablative lasers resurface the outer layer of skin to address superficial concerns like wrinkles, sun damage, and other signs of aging. Non-ablative lasers are less invasive, warming the deeper layers of tissue to address minor skin issues and enhance collagen production.

Halo™ laser treatments target deep within the skin without damaging the top layer. Patients may receive the results of more intensive treatment with the downtime of a non-ablative laser. Most patients feel comfortable returning to their daily activities within a few days.

Preparing for a Halo™ Laser Treatment

There is no required preparation time for Halo™ laser treatments; however, several methods exist to minimize risks and maximize your results.

Two weeks before your appointment, we at Mentor Plastic Surgery & MedSpa we recommend avoiding exposure to the sun or tanning of any type. There should be no waxing, tweezing, or use of hair-removal depilatories or creams in the area to be treated. If you are prone to cold sores, Dr. Vanek may prescribe anti-viral medication to minimize risk.

One week before your Halo™ laser treatment, please stop using skincare products with active ingredients such as:

  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • Glycolic acid
  • Salicylic acid
  • Retinol
  • Hydroquinone

The active ingredients of these everyday products can alter good results.

Immediately before your appointment, keep your skin clean and free of makeup or lotions.  Clean skin is an essential part of your preparation as it lowers the risk and improves the results of your Halo™ laser treatment.

Benefits of Halo™ Laser Treatments

Halo™ laser treatments reduce skin issues such as spots, discolorations, wrinkles, fine lines, uneven skin tone and texture, and enlarged pores.

The benefits of this treatment include the following:

  • The results of an ablative laser
  • Downtime of a non-ablative laser
  • See initial results in 5-7 days
  • Long-term effects can last years
  • Highly customizable treatment

The laser’s customizable settings enable Dr. Vanek and his team to adapt to your skin type and tone. The Halo™ laser is considered one of the safest treatments for darker skin tones. It is also safe for treating both the face and body. Most treatments take 30-60 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.

Luckily, non-invasive treatments with Halo™ can eliminate those unfortunate reminders of joyous times spent enjoying pleasant weather and rejuvenating healthy, glowing skin.

Skin Discolorations

A sign of sun-damaged skin is the spots that can develop from overexposure to harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. These include:

  • Sunspots
  • Brown spots
  • Freckles
  • Blotches
  • Discolorations
  • Hyperpigmentation

Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Freckles are one of the most common signs of sun damage. Ultraviolet exposure can lead to fine lines, wrinkles, and loose and sagging skin. When combined with the effects of aging, this creates unwanted alterations in your appearance.

Uneven Skin Texture or Tone

The heat from the sun can dry out your skin, leaving your face dull and dehydrated. Unfortunately, your rejuvenating skincare products can only do so much to restore the moisture lost to the sun’s rays. And with a build-up of dead cells and debris causing tone and texture issues, they may not even effectively penetrate your exterior to provide relief.

Enlarged Pores

Sun damage can worsen enlarged pores, which can become an issue as you age. The pores on the face are already bigger than the others all over your body, and the last thing you want to do is make them more noticeable. Prolonged time in the sun can do just that.

Halo Treats All of Your Concerns

The good news is that a single treatment with Halo can address all these concerns. This fantastic, non-invasive laser procedure safely and effectively revitalizes sun-damaged skin. It’s efficient because it employs two laser wavelengths to repair and rejuvenate your skin. One laser targets the outer layer, or epidermis, to diminish pigmentation and restore a vibrant glow. The second laser penetrates the deeper layer, or dermis, to reverse years of damage. This means you can tackle spots, wrinkles, enlarged pores, and a dull, dry, rough exterior without seeking multiple methods to achieve this.

The Procedure

One of our favorite things about treating sun-damaged skin with Halo is that Dr. Vanek can personalize each treatment to provide a customized level of rejuvenation. The session will last 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your goals. To ensure a comfortable experience, alleviating discomfort during and after the procedure, a topical numbing cream can be applied to the skin before the Halo treatment. Halo also has little to no downtime, so reversing years of skin damage from the sun will not take any unnecessary time out of your busy life.

The Benefits of Renuvion for Abdominoplasty: A Less Invasive Tummy Tuck

Abdominoplasty—commonly known as a tummy tuck—has long been the gold standard for achieving a flatter, firmer, and more toned abdomen. However, traditional tummy tucks require extensive surgical intervention, longer recovery times, and potential scarring. Fortunately, advancements in cosmetic surgery have introduced innovative, less invasive techniques that provide outstanding results with reduced downtime.

One such innovation is Renuvion technology is a revolutionary skin-tightening and tissue-coagulation system that enhances abdominoplasty results with minimal invasiveness.

This article explores the benefits of Renuvion-assisted abdominoplasty, which offers a safer, more efficient alternative to traditional tummy tucks.

What is Renuvion?

Renuvion is an advanced cosmetic technology that uses a unique combination of radiofrequency energy (RF) and helium plasma to tighten skin and improve tissue tone. This technology works by delivering controlled heat beneath the skin, which contracts collagen fibers and stimulates the body’s natural healing response. The result is firmer, smoother skin with improved elasticity—without needing large incisions or extensive tissue removal.

Initially developed for medical procedures such as electrosurgery, Renuvion has been successfully adapted for cosmetic applications, including skin tightening in various body areas. When combined with abdominoplasty, Renuvion provides a less invasive option for individuals seeking a sculpted abdomen without undergoing a full traditional tummy tuck.

Key Benefits of Renuvion for Abdominoplasty

1. Less Invasive Than a Traditional Tummy Tuck

Traditional abdominoplasty requires large incisions to remove excess skin and tighten the underlying muscles. While effective, this procedure is invasive and requires extended recovery.

Renuvion, on the other hand, enables surgeons to achieve significant skin tightening without large incisions. The technology contracts and firms the skin from the inside out by delivering controlled RF energy beneath the skin through a tiny entry point. This reduces the need for excessive skin removal, making the procedure far less invasive.

2. Shorter Recovery Time

Because Renuvion minimizes tissue trauma and avoids large incisions, patients experience significantly reduced recovery times compared to traditional abdominoplasty. Many patients can return to normal activities within a few weeks, as opposed to the typical 6-8 weeks required for a full tummy tuck.

With traditional tummy tucks, post-operative discomfort and swelling can last for weeks or even months. Renuvion-assisted abdominoplasty reduces swelling, bruising, and pain, leading to a more comfortable recovery process.

3. Improved Skin Tightening and Elasticity

One of the main challenges with any body contouring procedure is achieving optimal skin tightening. Traditional tummy tucks involve physically removing excess skin, but they don’t necessarily improve skin elasticity.

Renuvion addresses this issue by stimulating collagen production, leading to long-term skin improvement. The RF energy and helium plasma cause immediate contraction of collagen fibers, and over time, the body continues to produce new collagen, further improving skin tone and texture.

4. Minimal Scarring

Traditional tummy tucks leave a long, horizontal scar along the lower abdomen. While surgeons try to place the scar within the bikini line, it remains a permanent and visible reminder of the surgery.

Since Renuvion-assisted abdominoplasty requires only small incisions, scarring is minimal. The tiny access points used for the Renuvion wand heal quickly and are nearly invisible once the skin fully recovers. Renuvion is an excellent option for patients who want skin tightening benefits without significant scarring.

5. Can Be Combined with Liposuction for Enhanced Results

Renuvion is often paired with liposuction to enhance body contouring results. Liposuction removes excess fat deposits, while Renuvion tightens and firms the overlying skin.

For patients with mild to moderate skin laxity and who do not need extensive skin removal, Renuvion combined with liposuction can provide a more sculpted, youthful appearance without the need for a full abdominoplasty.

6. Reduced Risk of Complications

Every surgical procedure carries some risks, including infection, excessive bleeding, and complications related to anesthesia. Because Renuvion-assisted abdominoplasty is less invasive, it has a lower risk of complications than traditional tummy tucks.

Renuvion’s precise energy delivery system also minimizes the risk of thermal damage to surrounding tissues, making it a safer alternative for skin tightening.

7. More Natural-Looking Results

Some patients worry that a traditional tummy tuck can create an unnatural or overly tight appearance. Because Renuvion gradually contracts and tightens the skin, the results are more natural and balanced.

Over time, as collagen continues to rebuild, patients experience a smooth, firm abdominal contour without the overly pulled look that can sometimes occur with traditional skin excision techniques.

8. Suitable for a Wider Range of Patients

Not everyone is a candidate for a full tummy tuck. Some patients may only have mild skin laxity that doesn’t require extensive surgical intervention.

Renuvion provides a customizable approach that can be tailored to different levels of skin laxity. Whether used as a standalone treatment or combined with other body contouring techniques, it offers flexibility for a broader range of patients.

9. Long-lasting Results

Unlike some noninvasive skin tightening treatments requiring multiple sessions, Renuvion typically provides long-lasting results after just one procedure. The collagen-stimulating effects continue for several months after treatment, and many patients see improved skin firmness for years afinter the procedure.

And keep mind that when patients ðixzsdn Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a balanced diet, can further prolong the results.

10. Less Downtime for Busy Lifestyles

Many people considering body contouring procedures have busy schedules and cannot afford extended downtime. Because Renuvion significantly reduces recovery time, it is ideal for individuals who want to return to normal activities faster while still achieving remarkable aesthetic improvements.

Who is a Good Candidate for Renuvion-Assisted Abdominoplasty?

Renuvion is an excellent option for patients 69who:

  • Have mild to moderate skin laxity in the abdominal area
  • Want to avoid large incisions and significant scarring
  • Are looking for a quicker recovery than a traditional tummy tuck allows
  • Have stubborn fat and loose skin that diet and exercise haven’t addressed
  • Are in good overall health and have realistic expectations

While Renuvion offers incredible benefits, patients with severe skin laxity or significant muscle separation (diastasis recti) may still require a full abdominoplasty for optimal results.

Conclusion

Renuvion has revolutionized how surgeons approach abdominoplasty. It offers a minimally invasive alternative that delivers exceptional skin-tightening benefits with less downtime, minimal scarring, and natural-looking results. By harnessing the power of radiofrequency energy and helium plasma, Renuvion enhances the effectiveness of tummy tucks while reducing the invasiveness of traditional methods.

For individuals looking to achieve a firmer, more sculpted abdomen without the extensive surgery of a traditional tummy tuck, Renuvion presents a game-changing solution. As the demand for minimally invasive cosmetic procedures continues to rise, Renuvion is one of the most promising advancements in aesthetic medicine today.

What about Laser Treatments for Acne Scars?

Acne—just about everyone has had acne at some point in their lives. For some, this is a common skin condition affecting more than 50 million Americans, and it will clear up on its own or by changing your soap. For others, acne is the bane of their existence, leading to dermatologist or plastic surgeon visits and trials of different creams and products.

Severe acne can cause scarring either immediately after disappearing or later in life. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, “As we age, acne scars often become more noticeable because our skin loses collagen.”

Acne scarring results from deep breaks in pore walls that spill infected material into surrounding tissue and cause lesions. Your skin will attempt to repair this by forming new collagen fibers, which aren’t as smooth as the original skin.

How do you fix it? A significant form of treatment is laser skin resurfacing.

What Is Laser Resurfacing?

Using lasers to resurface the skin (also known as a laser peel) is a non-surgical solution to removing acne, dark spots, and other marks. The laser’s heat eliminates the skin’s top layer, which contains the scar. Once removed, the heat attracts blood to the area, reducing inflammation. The heat and light work together to support regenerating healthy, new skin cells. Although the process decreases the appearance of scarring, it doesn’t completely eliminate it.

Depending on the type of scarring, physicians utilize one of three types of laser resurfacing: ablative, non-ablative, and fractionated. The ablative technique uses either erbium YAG or carbon dioxide lasers, both of which remove the entirety of the top layer of skin. In non-ablative resurfacing, infrared lasers stimulate collagen production. Fractionated treatments use fractional lasers to support tissue growth while removing darkly pigmented cells under the top layer of skin.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

A good candidate for laser resurfacing doesn’t have active acne but lasting, visible scars. This procedure is not typically suited for patients with deep wrinkles or excessively sagging skin. People who have darker skin tones may be at risk of healing with hyperpigmentation. Consult Dr. Paul Vanek, a board-certified plastic surgeon, to determine if you are a good candidate for this treatment.

How Do You Prepare for a Treatment?

Because it’s a non-invasive procedure, there isn’t too much you’ll need to do to prepare. Typically, you should avoid taking aspirin or blood thinners and smoking two weeks before. It would be best if you also refrained from utilizing skin care products with retinol.

During your consultation, Dr. Vanek will tell you if you need to begin a skin care regimen six weeks before to prepare your skin for treatment and minimize complications. Consult with your doctor about additional measures you should take.

What Does the Procedure Entail?

When you arrive for treatment, Dr. Vanek may numb your skin with a local anesthetic, sedative, or both to relieve discomfort. Afterward, your face will be cleaned, and you may be given eye protection. Then, the doctor will administer laser light over the area using one of the three resurfacing techniques.

During the procedure, you can feel small, temporary heat flashes in the treated area. Once the treatment is completed, a specialized dressing will be applied to protect the skin. The entire process takes 30 minutes to two hours, depending on the area of your body that needs resurfacing.

What Areas Can It Help?

Although many patients undergo facial laser skin resurfacing, the treatment can also target the arms, back, upper torso, and neck.

What Is Recovery Like?

After laser resurfacing, the treated area may feel like you’ve gotten mild sunburn and appear red, with some swelling. It’s also normal to experience stinging or itching in the days afterward. About five days later, your skin will become dry and peel, revealing new, pink skin. Total recovery time can take one to two weeks. However, you can get back to work in one to two days.

Dr. Vanek may ask you to do a few things to help you recover and achieve your desired results. These can include:

  • Cleaning the area with saline or diluted vinegar solution two to five times per day
  • Applying a customized skin care treatment
  • Use generous amounts of sunscreen to protect the sensitive, new skin
  • Utilizing ice packs during the first few days
  • Elevating your head with an additional pillow each night

How Much Do Laser Treatments Cost?

These procedures aren’t typically covered by insurance. There are a few factors that affect treatment costs:

  • The size of the area being treated.
  • The number of scars you want reduced.
  • The number of treatments required.
  • Anesthesia.
  • Surgical facility fees.
  • Prescription medication prices.

What Are the Risks & Side Effects?

Generally, if you enlist an experienced surgeon to perform your procedure, there are minimal temporary side effects. These can include swelling, redness, or light pain similar to sunburn. The latter should only last a few hours after treatment, while the redness can remain for several days. In rare cases, laser treatment can cause hyperpigmentation and infection.

Treating Acne Scars: Chemical Peel or Laser Resurfacing?

The question “Which procedure is most suitable for me?” often comes up in discussions about facial treatments for different skin conditions. Here are commonly suggested procedures for addressing these cosmetic issues.

include laser skin resurfacing, microdermabrasion, or a chemical peel. The majority of patients avoid invasive plastic surgery, choosing non-invasive cosmetic therapies for facial rejuvenation. Dr. Vanek will help you decide which treatment to choose based on your skin tone, the amount of downtime you prefer, your skin type, and your level of involvement.

The following treatments exfoliate (peel) layers of skin:

  1. chemical peels
  2. microdermabrasion
  3. laser skin treatments

The above treatments improve acne scars, blemishes, wrinkles, skin tone, and texture. There are many different types of laser treatments and chemical peels. Which is best for you?

With his expertise in minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, Dr. Paul Vanek is uniquely positioned to guide you during your consultation. He will examine your skin type, discuss your concerns, and then facilitate a custom treatment protocol. You will receive the best skin care to address acne scars, fine lines, pigmentation, or discoloration.

By combining the right skin care regimen with either chemical peels or laser skin resurfacing, you can look forward to achieving clear, rejuvenated, and younger-looking skin.

Which is better, a chemical peel or a laser?

Over time, the chemical peel has proven reliable in improving a patient’s overall skin tone and texture. With a chemical peel, you can effectively remove fine lines, discoloration, hyperpigmentation, and sun damage, reducing wrinkles and minor blemishes. A chemical peel is one option for enhancing skin tone and texture. Skin tone is essential for the strength and type of chemical peel Dr. Vanek will recommend. For example, light skin tones tolerate deep chemical peels.

By comparison, people who have dark skin tones, such as African Americans, Asians, or Hispanics, should have milder chemical peels.

Light chemical peels use glycolic, citric, or lactic acids, known as alpha hydroxy acids, to exfoliate the top and outermost layers of the skin. A popular acne treatment uses beta hydroxy acids, called salicylic acid, to decrease oil production and unclog pores. Medium-strength chemical peels address deep wrinkles and fine lines.

Deep chemical peels use trichloroacetic acid concentrations or phenol. However, laser resurfacing has become the norm for treating deep wrinkles, acne scars, and fine lines.

Are laser treatments better than chemical peels?

A series of chemical peels is often necessary for the best cosmetic results. While they may take longer to effect similar changes in the skin as laser treatments, it’s important to remember that patience is key.

Overall, chemical peels are usually less expensive, making them a more cost-effective option for many. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the national average cost of chemical peels is $700. In contrast, laser treatments can range from $800 to $3,000 for a single session.

What about Microdermabrasion?

During microdermabrasion, the practitioner uses a handheld device to pass the crystals over the skin and then vacuums them away along with the dead skin. Microdermabrasion improves the skin’s overall look, feel, and tone. Nevertheless, it is not as successful in treating major skin conditions such as acne scarring, deep wrinkles, or hyperpigmentation. Microdermabrasion has no recovery time or discomfort.

Laser skin resurfacing

Laser skin treatments are similar to chemical peels in that they can treat similar symptoms. However, one area in which laser treatments are superior to microdermabrasion and chemical peels is their controllability. Doctors can precisely administer laser treatments, making them highly targeted.

When Dr. Vanek uses a laser to treat acne scars, he can target the scar tissue and leave the healthy skin alone. A laser can stimulate new collagen production. While deeper chemical peels promote collagen production at the dermal layer, a laser is more targeted. It can produce more collagen with faster results.

For acne scarring, lasers such as the Fraxel laser, Picosure, and eMatrix are safe and effective options. The eMatrix laser, in particular, is a ‘color-blind laser,’ making it suitable for all skin tones without the risk of hyperpigmentation or scarring. Rest assured, Dr. Vanek will discuss these options to determine the best treatment for your acne scarring.

Ablative vs. non-ablative laser treatment

Ablative laser treatments remove the uppermost layer of the skin. Non-ablative laser treatments heat the underlying layer without damaging the uppermost layer. By heating the underlying layer, collagen stimulation is produced. Still, ablative lasers may be necessary for treating deep wrinkles or severely sun-damaged skin. Dr. Vanek will help assess your skin type, texture, and concerns to determine the best treatment for you.

Is it possible to combine chemical peels and laser treatments?

Some individuals consider chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and laser treatments as various parts of an overall treatment option to achieve optimal results. When done a few weeks before laser resurfacing treatment can produce better results. Alternatively, microdermabrasion and superficial peels, even at-home peels, also work well together. Finding the best combination of treatments is one key to a successful cosmetic outcome that Dr. Vanek will help facilitate.

Side effects of chemical peels & laser treatments

Regarding recovery time, superficial light chemical peels may take one to two days of peeling after the procedure. There is no recovery time after some laser treatments. Microdermabrasion has no downtime and can be done during your lunch break. Medium-strength chemical peels can lead to one week or more of peeling, redness, and downtime.

Non-ablative laser treatments, such as those used to treat facial redness, require no downtime. eMatrix or Fraxel usually requires 48 hours of downtime to treat wrinkles or acne scars. After chemical peels or laser treatments, it is necessary to avoid sun exposure strictly, as new, healthy skin is produced.

Can you do laser treatment after a chemical peel?

Yes, many patients have laser treatments after a chemical peel. Depending on the chemical peel’s strength, type, and skin issues, the peel can “pre-treat” the skin and prepare it for the laser. There are ablative and non-ablative lasers currently used in dermatology. Non-ablative lasers such as V-Beam and Fraxel often perform or alternate with chemical peel treatments. During a chemical peel, the procedure exfoliates dead skin while stimulating the growth of new and healthy skin. Similarly, laser treatments treat and remove fine lines, brown spots, age, and sun spots while encouraging healthy skin cells and forming new collagen. Combining different methods can achieve the best cosmetic results and stimulate collagen production for healthy, beautiful skin.

Which chemical, peel or laser, is better for acne scars?

Dr. Paul Vanek is an expert in treating acne scars in his Mentor office. He has achieved optimal results by using a combination of the treatments described. Dr. Vanek will guide you to the best treatment combination to remove acne scars and improve skin.

How do I decide between laser treatment and a chemical peel?

Consulting with Dr. Vanek will help you decide on the best treatment options. Whether you want to treat discoloration, acne scarring, or sun damage, the best thing to do is schedule a consultation with board-certified Northeastern Ohio plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Vanek. What is a Mommy Makeover?

Pregnancy is a unique, life-changing journey. But many women experience unwanted changes to their bodies, such as sagging breasts, stretch marks, stretched abdominal muscles, or loose skin. Other changes include the presence of unwanted fat pockets and changes to the labia.

These changes become especially noticeable when women return to pre-baby weight through exercise and diet.

A mommy makeover is typically ideal for patients who want to rejuvenate their figures after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Treatments may include body contouring procedures, such as:

  • breast enhancements
  • liposuction
  • tummy tucks

These surgeries are performed in one trip to the operating room. While having these surgeries simultaneously may sound convenient, what does a mommy makeover recovery look like?

With the board-certified experts at Mentor Plastic Surgery & MedSpa, we’ve gathered information to answer your questions about mommy makeovers and resolve your concerns about recovery. We want to help you feel refreshed and confident following your mommy makeover recovery. Here is some information about mommy makeover recovery and a few of our favorite tips.

How Is a Mommy Makeover Surgery Performed?

A mommy makeover consists of several surgical procedures to restore the body after having children. Pregnancy affects multiple body areas—breasts, abdomen, and labia. The body can be restored during one trip to the operating room for appropriate patients. Still, it may involve two separate procedures for safety and recovery if necessary.

The procedures in your mommy makeover are determined based on your individual goals and the individual changes your body has experienced during pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. A mommy makeover may include some of the following procedures.

1. Breast Augmentation

Many times, breast volume is lost during pregnancy. Breast augmentation uses breast implants to enhance breast shape and increase size. With many sizes available, breast augmentation can be customized to help you meet your goals.

2. Breast Lift

Sagging breasts are the most common post-pregnancy complaint. A breast lift rejuvenates the breasts by reshaping and repositioning the mound and nipples. The breasts are raised to a higher position on the chest wall.

3. Tummy Tuck

The abdomen is one of the areas most impacted by pregnancy. A tummy tuck and liposuction change the abdomen. They use an incision across your lower belly. This tightens the abdominal muscles and removes extra fat and skin.

4. Liposuction

Liposuction is a procedure to remove stubborn, exercise-resistant fat from the waist, hips, thighs, or abdomen. Small incisions remove unwanted fat to recontour each area.

5. Labiaplasty

Stretched-out labia are common after pregnancy. A labiaplasty, which resizes the labia minora or majora, helps restore comfort and improve the aesthetic appearance of the labia.

What is Recovery Like After a Mommy Makeover?

Recovery after a mommy makeover dramatically depends on the number of procedures you have. The more procedures you have, the longer your recovery will take. However, as multiple surgeries are performed during one procedure, you will have a significantly shorter recovery than each procedure separately.

In the first few days following your mommy makeover, you will experience pain and discomfort. However, after a week or so, your pain should be manageable with over-the-counter pain medication. You may experience bruising and swelling that takes up to two to three weeks to resolve. Residual swelling may take six months to resolve completely.

Most patients usually take about two weeks off work for the initial recovery. If you have a physically demanding job, you may need more time. During this time, you will need more rest than usual.

Dr. Vanek will advise you to avoid intense exercise and heavy lifting for four to six weeks. During this time, you will also be unable to lift small children. Dr. Vanek will advise you when you can resume lifting and carrying your children.

During the First Few Days of Mommy Makeover Recovery

The first few days of your mommy makeover recovery time will depend on the procedures included in your procedure and your body’s recovery rate.

Immediately following surgery, you may be groggy or nauseous as the anesthesia wears off, which typically takes a few hours.

Pain and discomfort are most pronounced for the first few days. You can avoid this by taking your prescribed pain medication as directed. During these first days, expect to get much rest to prevent causing additional discomfort. When you are awake, you may experience soreness and tenderness.

You may notice some bruising or swelling around the treated areas. Compression garments should be worn as directed to help minimize swelling and encourage the healing process. Cold compresses may help manage discomfort.

When Can You Return to Work and Normal Activities After a Mommy Makeover?

Your return to work and normal activities following a mommy makeover greatly depend on which procedures are included in your procedure.

We recommend that patients take one to two weeks off work to allow time to rest and heal. Patients with more strenuous jobs will require more time off or should request modified duties for a few weeks.

However, you must continue avoiding strenuous activities, such as demanding workouts, running, or swimming, for at least six weeks.

Most Common Side-Effects of a Mommy Makeover Recovery

Following a mommy makeover procedure, you may experience a few side effects as you would with any other surgical experience.

  • Immediately following your surgery, you may experience grogginess, nausea, or dizziness due to the anesthesia.
  • Pain and discomfort following a mommy makeover are most prominent in the first few days. You should receive a prescription for medication to help manage pain. After the severe discomfort eases, over-the-counter pain medication may be taken.
  • You may experience bruising around the incision sites that last two to three weeks. To mitigate bruising, you’re encouraged to walk around daily to promote circulation. Walking also helps prevent blood clots from forming in the legs.
  • Swelling often accompanies bruising. You may experience significant swelling for about two weeks, with residual swelling lasting two to three weeks. A cold compress may help manage swelling. Compression garments help minimize swelling and encourage the healing of your new contours.
  • Numbness and tingling near the incisions are common.
  • Following breast enhancement surgery, nipple sensitivity, and breast sensitivity may be impacted for several weeks.
  • Scarring is unavoidable following surgery and may be quite noticeable in the first few weeks after surgery. Our experts will guide you through caring for your incisions and subsequent scars to help them heal and fade. Many of the scars from a mommy makeover can be concealed under clothing.

Minimizing Discomfort and Promotion of Healing After a Mommy Makeover

Depending on the number of surgeries included, a mommy makeover can be a significant procedure, so preparing for your recovery is essential. You can do several things to help yourself recover successfully before your surgery.

Here are a few of our favorite tips:

  • Don’t tough it out. Take your pain medication as directed to avoid being in pain.
  • Use cold compresses on the affected areas to alleviate discomfort and minimize swelling.
  • Allow yourself time to rest. You’ve just experienced significant surgery, so take at least a week or two off from work. Don’t rush back into your normal routine.
  • Rest and sleep in comfortable, neutral positions, and use pillows to elevate your head and shoulders. If you can, sleep in a recliner.
  • Schedule help around the house to help with chores or care for children, pets, or others under your care. For six weeks, you, including small children, cannot lift anything over ten pounds.
  • Consider cooking and freezing healthy meals for easy preparation after your makeover.
  • Arrange a comfortable and clean space in which to heal and rest.
  • Wear your support garments as directed by your surgeon to minimize swelling and support your new contours.
  • Avoid smoking, being around smoke, or using any nicotine products until your healing is complete. Nicotine can delay healing and create complications.

What Are the Risks and Complications Associated with Mommy Makeover Recovery?

Mommy makeovers are no riskier than most other invasive surgeries. The main difference is that mommy makeovers consist of multiple procedures performed simultaneously. Dr. Paul Vanek at Mentor Plastic Surgery & MedSpa knows the number of procedures they can safely perform together. He will be honest about what is anatomically accomplishable in the timeframe allowed.

Our highly skilled, board-certified surgeons and their expert team perform surgeries in accredited surgical centers to ensure patient safety and comfort.

Risks associated with surgical procedures may include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Poor incision healing
  • Hematoma
  • Seroma
  • Loss of nipple sensation
  • Inability to breastfeed
  • Scarring
  • Fat necrosis
  • Deep venous thrombosis
  • Cardiac and pulmonary complications
  • Anesthesia risks

Is a Mommy Makeover Right for You? Factors to Consider Before Surgery

One of the most important factors to consider before a mommy makeover procedure is future pregnancies. Bear in mind that becoming pregnant again may negate some of the results of your mommy makeover, requiring a secondary surgery to restore your results. Due to this fact, many women postpone their mommy makeover procedures until they are sure they do not want to become pregnant again.

Other factors you may consider are:

  • Recovery can be lengthy and difficult. Numbness and swelling may persist for up to a year following surgery.
  • Ensure you have time to recover, not just time off for your surgery. You will need assistance caring for your children, pets, or others and caring for your household.
  • Compression garments are beneficial. While they may be challenging to put on or uncomfortable, compression garments help limit swelling and promote healing.
  • Eat a healthy diet before and after your procedure. Your body needs healthy, nutritious foods to fuel your recovery, so begin your recovery before your surgery. Make sure you eat lean protein, high-fiber, and low-salt foods. Avoid sugary, processed, or fried foods, which can hinder healing.
  • The best candidates are not planning future pregnancies, are finished breastfeeding, and are near their goal weight.

We recommend candidates for mommy makeover should:

  1. Be in good medical health
  2. Maintain a healthy lifestyle with a BMI under 30
  3. Be non-smokers or willing to quit four weeks before and after surgery
  4. Have no medical conditions that impair healing
  5. Understand the surgical risks
  6. Have a positive outlook and realistic expectations
  7. Be willing to follow instructions thoroughly
  8. Partnering with a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon

Choosing the right plastic surgeon is one of the most important decisions of your mommy makeover journey. Board certification is the first factor you should consider when choosing a plastic surgeon. When you choose a board-certified plastic surgeon, you select a doctor who values and maintains exceptionally high education standards, knowledge, and skills.

Along with board certification, it’s essential to look at your plastic surgeon’s performance record and reputation. Suppose they have an extensive successful performance record and an impeccable reputation. In that case, you can rest assured that your plastic surgeon will provide the appropriate care throughout your cosmetic surgery journey.

Another essential factor to consider when choosing your mommy makeover surgeon is that your plastic surgeon should present themselves as a professional, honest, and compassionate person with whom you feel comfortable. You should feel confident trusting your surgeon and openly communicating with them.

It’s perfect for those seeking rejuvenation, and even preventing visible signs of aging before they start. MOXI addresses signs of sun damage, pigmentation, and uneven skin texture, resulting in a more transparent, brighter complexion with little downtime.

MOXI Laser and Skin Types

MOXI Laser is a safe treatment for all skin types and tones. This diversity makes it an appealing option for anyone looking to enhance the appearance of the skin. MOXI laser treatments offer minimal discomfort with effective results, ensuring everyone can benefit from its rejuvenating effects.

The MOXI Laser is a beacon of innovation and excellence, offering preventative and rejuvenating benefits for all skin types. Designed for those who wish to delay the signs of aging or simply enhance their skincare regimen, MOXI delivers outstanding results with minimal downtime.

Whether targeting pigmentation, improving skin texture, or seeking a youthful glow, this cutting-edge treatment caters to your needs. You can rejuvenate your complexion and achieve radiant skin effortlessly.

MOXI Laser: What to Expect During the Treatment

MOXI is a comfortable yet gentle laser treatment that most patients find very tolerable. On the day of the treatment, a numbing cream applied to the skin before the treatment ensures maximum comfort. The MOXI Laser employs fractionated laser technology to create micro-coagulation zones in the skin.

These tiny micro-injuries stimulate collagen production and skin renewal. A gentle warming sensation may be felt as the laser works its magic. Treatment time is short, averaging 8-10 minutes for an entire session.

MOXI Laser: What to Expect After the Treatment

In the days following your MOXI Laser treatment, you’ll see continuous skin texture and tone improvements. The day after MOXI, your skin may appear red, and depending on your level of treatment, you may see small microdots called “mends” where the laser was applied. This is normal! The body naturally repairs these zones and replaces damaged cells with healthy, vibrant skin.

Between days three and five, the mends will slough off, revealing new skin beneath. As your healing continues, many patients have smoother, more radiant skin. Staying consistent with your aftercare routine to benefit fully from MOXI Laser’s transformative effects.

Is MOXI Suitable for Any Age?

Yes, MOXI is a versatile treatment suitable for patients of all ages. Whether you’re in your 20s and want to maintain youthful skin or in your later years and wish to address early signs of aging, MOXI is a flexible option that can adapt to your specific skin concerns and goals.

Can MOXI Benefit Those with Sensitive Skin?

Yes, sensitive skin benefits from the MOXI treatment, as it is a gentle laser. Minor irritation and discomfort are present, which makes it ideal for patients with sensitive skin.

Is MOXI Beneficial for Individuals with Acne?

For those with acne, MOXI Laser can be beneficial. It promotes skin renewal and reduces inflammation, improving skin tone and texture while smoothing acne scars.

MOXI Benefits for Patients with Hyperpigmentation

MOXI Laser effectively targets and reduces hyperpigmentation, promotes an even skin tone, and addresses damage or aging caused by sun exposure or aging.

MOXI Benefits for Patients with Wrinkles and Fine Lines

MOXI Laser results in a youthful and refreshed appearance by stimulating collagen production. Wrinkles and fine lines smooth out.

What Patients Should Avoid MOXI Laser?

While MOXI Laser is suitable for many, specific contraindications exist.

Pregnant patients and those with open wounds, active skin infections, weakened immune systems, or cold sores should avoid MOXI. Patients who have an implantable medical device such as a pacemaker, those with a recent sunburn, and those with a deep tan should also wait until these conditions have resolved. It is essential to consult with Dr. Vanek, our Moxi specialist, to assess your suitability and plan your treatment.

MOXI Aftercare

Aftercare for MOXI Laser treatment involves moisturizing your skin, avoiding direct sun exposure, and using a high-SPF sunscreen.

a) Post-Treatment Care

Your post-care regimen is as simple:

  1. Moisturize: Regularly hydrate your skin to support the healing process.
  2. Sun Protection: Wear a moisturizing physical sunscreen and stay out of the sun.
  3. Makeup: You may wear makeup 24 hours after treatment.

b) The Benefits of MOXI Laser

MOXI is a game-changer for skin rejuvenation. Here’s why:

Minimally-Invasive Treatments for Brides to Prepare for Your Big Day – Mentor Plastic Surgery

If you’re planning a wedding soon, you must be planning your beauty regimen. Every bride and groom wants to look and feel their best on their big day.

At Mentor Plastic Surgery and MedSpa, we understand the importance of your wedding day and are here to help you look and feel your best. We offer various services to bring out a radiant complexion, from HydraFacials to laser treatments.

For many approaching their much-anticipated wedding day, visiting a plastic surgeon like Dr. Paul Vanek, MD, is a great way to look their best before the big day. We offer several cosmetic surgery procedures perfect for achieving just that little bit of extra perfection for one of the most important days of their lives.

At Mentor Plastic Surgery and MedSpa, we offer guidance when considering cosmetic procedures and ensure they flow smoothly.

Body Enhancement Procedures

Procedures for body enhancement allow the bride to fit into that perfect wedding dress in the most attractive way possible.

Standard body enhancement procedures include:

  • Breast augmentation
  • Liposuction
  • Other augmentation procedures

These body-enhancing procedures help sculpt body contours and achieve a perfect figure, ensuring that all your wedding pictures look great.

Enhancement of Face and Neck

These procedures include facelifts, rhinoplasty, skin tightening, and others that can refine specific features of the face and neck. These treatments—often with no recovery period—can help.

Timing

The correct procedure timing is essential, as you don’t want to experience any redness or other minor visible side effects that might occur several days after the treatment.

  • For non-invasive procedures, it is recommended that treatments begin at least a year before the wedding and continue regularly during that year.
  • Skincare treatments should be ramped up approximately six weeks before the wedding. Surgical procedures should be completed far in advance to allow your body to look its best after healing.
  • Body contouring procedures such as liposuction or breast augmentation should be completed at least six weeks before dress fitting appointments.

Minimally-Invasive Treatments

You’ve picked your color theme, sampled the food, and even planned out your seating chart—but, dear bride-to-be, have you put much time and thought into yourself? Studies show that cosmetic treatments for brides are on the rise. There was reportedly a 30 percent increase in people considering cosmetic procedures as part of their wedding prep.

While cosmetic surgery takes months of planning, almost any bride can see visible benefits from today’s quick, zero-downtime treatment options.

At Mentor Plastic Surgery and MedSpa, in addition to our full range of Aesthetician Services, we offer several proven non-surgical and minimally invasive treatments. Here is our list of favorite subtle bridal “tweakments” to help ensure you feel picture-perfect on your wedding day.

1. Cosmetic Injectables

For brides seeking a non-surgical treatment that is quick, nearly painless, and has no downtime, injectables like BOTOX and dermal fillers are a great option.

Neuromodulators like BOTOX & Dysport

Neuromodulators, like BOTOX and Dysport, work to disable muscles subtly in targeted areas of the face by temporarily stopping some nerve signals to the muscle—thus beautifully smoothing out wrinkles and lines around the eyes, forehead, and between the eyebrows. When working neuromodulators into your pre-wedding beauty checklist, just be aware that the treatment must be touched up every 4-6 months.

Dermal Fillers

Expertly-placed dermal fillers, such as Juvéderm® or Restylane®, can correct several common skin concerns and enhance certain features or aspects of the face. Suppose you’re a soon-to-be bride seeing signs of aging or volume loss around the cheeks, under the eyes, or around the mouth and lips. In that case, dermal fillers are a great way to ensure you look refreshed and rejuvenated on your wedding day. Ideally, plan about a month ahead to allow time for your results to settle and any subtle touch-ups you may want.

Dermal fillers are an excellent option for brides who want to add a little volume to their cheeks or plump up their pout before their big day.

2. Microneedling

Traditional Microneedling

If regular microneedling treatments aren’t already a part of your skincare regimen, a few months before your wedding is a great time to start.

Traditional microneedling, or collagen induction therapy, uses a unique device with several tiny needles to create micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating collagen production.

Microneedling is highly effective in treating scars caused by acne and fine lines, reducing pores, and improving skin texture. It is safe for all skin types, and downtime is minimal. While just a single treatment can yield impressive results, we recommend brides start six months in advance and receive a series of treatments to achieve transformative results in time for their wedding.

3. Laser Skin Resurfacing

Many brides opt for laser skin resurfacing treatments to ensure their skin is plump, smooth, and radiant on their wedding day. Laser skin resurfacing treats dark spots, hyperpigmentation, and sun damage and retextures crepe-like skin and fine lines. The treatment’s ability to treat acne scars and wrinkles makes it an excellent fit for brides of all ages.

4. HydraFacial

Suppose you’ve never had one of these extraordinary facial treatments. In that case, the perfect time to start is the months, weeks, and even days before your wedding. HydraFacials are all the rage because they are quick and practical and can exfoliate, refresh, and hydrate all skin types.

The hydra-dermabrasion procedure cleanses and extracts impurities. At the same time, rejuvenating serums are infused into your pores. Hydra-dermabrasion is customizable to meet your specific skin care needs.

You can also schedule your final HydraFacial 3 to 4 days before your wedding. Your skin will be glowing and refreshed in your wedding photos.

5. Dermaplaning

Skin that feels baby-soft to the touch is the result of dermaplaning. Your skin is lightly grazed at the surface with a surgical instrument. This sloughs off the top layer of your skin, including any dead skin cells or fine hair. This leaves your skin with an incredibly soft and smooth surface, evens the texture. Dermaplaning is exfoliating your skin so your makeup will be flawless.

6. Renuvion®

If you’re looking to tighten and sculpt your face, neck, arms, abdomen, or thighs, Renuvion® might be an excellent fit. Renuvion is an innovative treatment that combines helium Plasma and Radiofrequency energy to contour from within without extensive surgery, extended downtime, or large, noticeable scars. While slightly invasive, this in-office procedure offers results that rival surgery.

During a Renuvion treatment, Dr. Vanek creates a small incision that is the entry point for placing the device just under your skin. The device then releases pro helium gas and radiofrequency energy to create a powerful, precise plasma energy stream. The energy generates heat to contract the skin, while excess helium gas cools the area. This combination of hot and cold energy tightens the tissues under the skin, providing dramatic and precise contouring results.

While Renuvion provides exceptional results on its own, it can also be combined with liposuction to treat particularly stubborn fat and address sagging skin in areas such as the arms, thighs, and abdomen in just a single treatment.

Recovery involves 3-5 days of downtime and a few weeks of restricted activity. Still, the results can be well worth the investment. As such, it’s best to have your Renuvion treatment at least a month before your big day.

Bonus Tip: Whatever procedures you choose, optimize your results with medical-grade skincare to ensure your skin is radiant and glowing on your wedding day.

Facial Rejuvenation: Balanced, Natural-Looking Results

Weight fluctuation, genetics, and age can all play a part in developing the loose, sagging skin around the jaw and neckline. As we age, our bodies produce fewer structural proteins like collagen and elastin, causing the skin to sag and accumulate in specific places on the face, neck, and around the eyes.

For this reason, many people consider a neck lift to help tighten and restore a youthful contour to the neck. While a neck lift works excellent as a standalone treatment, a more balanced, natural-looking result can be achieved when combined with other popular procedures.

At Mentor Plastic Surgery & MedSpa in Northeastern Ohio, Dr. Paul Vanek, a board-certified plastic surgeon, notes that the following three procedures are among the most beneficial when combined with your neck lift.

Facelift

Facelift surgery can help address sagging facial muscles, facial volume loss, and excess skin. It requires supporting and repositioning the underlying muscles to a youthful position. Dr. Vanek never wants to make you look unnatural or overdone. He prevents this by studying pictures of you and attempting to restore your youthful characteristics. The goal is always to manage the natural signs of aging while preserving and enhancing your natural beauty.

Eyelid Surgery

Sagging skin from the inevitable aging process can cause your eyes to look weak and tired. A surgical technique called blepharoplasty helps reawaken the way your eyelids look and enhance the natural contours of your eyes. This procedure combines excellently with a neck lift and can dramatically improve your overall appearance.

Benefits of Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery (also called a blepharoplasty or eye lift) is a procedure that minimizes sagging or excess or sagging eyelid skin and reduces under-eye bags or puffy eyes.

This procedure is sometimes performed for cosmetic reasons. However, in many cases, it is performed to restore vision obstructed by sagging skin in the eyelids.

In many cases, Dr. Vanek sometimes recommends a browlift because the position of the eyebrows can obstruct vision due to sagging skin in the upper eyelids.

Eyelid surgery is typically performed on patients thirty-five years of age and older due to age, gravity, and lessening collagen production.

Eyelid surgery on the lower eye or upper eyelids only can be performed.

However, addressing both regions simultaneously improves a more extensive facial rejuvenation program.

Many of our patients elect to have an eye lift, facelift, or brow lift. Laser skincare treatments and dermal fillers may also be added to your overall treatment plan to help maximize your results.

Blepharoplasty benefits:

  • Eyelids that appear refreshed-looking
  • Elimination of sagging eyelid skin and eye bags under the eyes
  • Creation of a well-defined eyelid area

Following Dr. Vanek’s instructions after surgery can help you plan on enjoying your results for years. When followed, a prescribed and sensible skincare routine will extend your results. A good skincare routine includes protecting your skin from sun exposure.

Brow Lift

Your brows emphasize your expressions and highlight your face’s best feature, the eyes. As we grow older, gravity and genetics can cause the brows and forehead to sag, more furrows to form on the forehead, and upper eyelids to droop, making us look tired and unhappy.

A brow lift is frequently paired with a neck lift for a more comprehensive rejuvenation of the face.

Face/Brow Lift Combination

The surgical procedure known as the facelift improves the signs of visible aging on the face and neck.

As individuals age, the skin and muscles of the face lose their tone and can become saggy. A facelift will improve signs of visible aging by removing selected areas of fat, tightening the deeper structures, and re-draping the skin.

A facelift can be performed alone or with other surgical procedures, such as liposuction, eyelid surgery, nasal surgery, or brow lift.

Any one or combinations of the following conditions may indicate that you are a good candidate for facelift surgery:

  • A fold, or a deep line, that runs beginning at the corners of your mouth to the corners of your nose.
  • No longer have a jawline that is well-defined and is known as jowls.
  • It is sagging of the cheekbones and deep wrinkles in the cheek area.
  • An excess of fatty tissue, loose skin, or wrinkles in the neck.

Dr. Vanek individualizes a facelift surgery for every patient. Those with a neckline and face beginning to sag but still have skin elasticity make the best candidates for facelift surgery.

Facial rejuvenation or facelift surgery is one of cosmetic plastic surgery’s most commonly performed procedures today. Nearly all civilized cultures worldwide recognize facelift surgery as a tool to turn back the hands of time and delay the appearance of aging. Facelift surgery can help change a person’s appearance, especially if they want their outer look to match how they feel inside.

When a facelift is approached at all levels, dramatic results can occur. “Attention to detail” improves the chances of a quality, long-lasting result. Addressing a person’s skincare, detrimental behaviors (e.g., sun exposure, tobacco smoke), and facial symmetry helps to influence the overall treatment plan and the final result. Each person’s care is customized to achieve their goals.

Because the aging process continues, all patients undergoing facelift surgery must consider the possibility of future revision surgery or “tucks.” No surgical procedure can be expected to last forever.

What are the Benefits of Having More than One Procedure?

During your consultation with Dr. Vanek, a board-certified facial plastic surgeon, you can collaborate on a complete facial treatment plan. Suppose it is safe for you to do so. In that case, there are significant benefits to having multiple procedures together instead of one at a time:

  • Less overall recovery time: The downtime after a combination of procedures is less than you would need after two separate operations.
  • Convenience: Having and recovering from surgery requires coordination and planning, mainly if children or other families depend on you. It is more convenient for you and your family to plan for one recovery period from a solo operation than separate surgeries.
  • Cost Saving: Combining procedures can even save you money in the long run, as many of the fees associated with your surgery will only have to be paid once.
