I keep thinking about male breast reduction, maybe for my 50th birthday. Am I too old? How common is my condition?
I have had many patients, and there are many men reading this, who have enlarged breasts. Despite the dramatically increased social acceptance of plastic surgery, this is one condition that most men are unnecessarily embarrassed to discuss, even with their doctor.
What causes male breast enlargement (gynecomastia)?
It is most often caused by factors beyond anyone’s control, such as genetics, health problems and medication. Sometimes, alcohol or drug use can also be factors, and being overweight can exacerbate the appearance. It is estimated that as many as 50% of men experience this condition sometime during their life, and breast reduction is the third most common male plastic surgery, behind rhinoplasty and eyelid surgery, and just ahead of Liposuction. It can be performed on healthy men at any age.
About male breast reduction
Male breast reduction surgery removes excess fat and glandular tissue, which restores a firmer and flatter contour to the chest. Results are immediate, and usually long-lasting, if not permanent. Upon your examination, less severe cases may allow an option to treat your condition with the less invasive Vaser Liposelection, involving small incisions in strategic areas where we can remove excess fat and/or tissue. Men undergoing breast reduction often decide to have Liposuction performed on other parts of their body while in surgery. Typically, patients can return to work within a week of surgery, and normal activities, including light exercise, within three weeks. You will be asked to wear an UnderArmour garment under your clothing, to reduce swelling.
If this condition has bothered you for most of your life, please come in and we can confidentially discuss your options.
