Yes, I perform ear surgery, also known as otoplasty. This procedure can improve the shape, position or proportion of the ear. It can correct an ear’s shape after an injury, or a defect in the ear structure at birth that becomes more apparent as a child ages.
The most common conditions are overly large ears (called macrotia) and protruding ears occurring on one or both sides in varying degrees.
Otoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. Incisions are generally made on the back surface of the ear. If they are necessary on the front of the ear, they are made within its folds to hide them. Surgical techniques then create or increase the antihelical fold (just inside the rim of the ear) to reduce enlarged conchal cartilage (the largest and deepest concavity of the external ear). Internal, non-removable sutures secure the newly shaped cartilage in place.
What results can I expect from ear surgery?
Patients will see almost immediate results, which will be visible when dressings that support the new shape of the ear are removed. When an ear has been permanently positioned closer to the head, surgical scars are either hidden behind the ear or within the ear’s natural creases
