Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)

“Gynecomastia is a glandular proliferation. Men of all ages are affected by it and it is often the result of genetics,” explains Dr. Vanek, a double board-certified general and plastic surgeon. “Men do develop fat deposits in their chest as a result of weight gain, but those deposits go down with fat loss. Gynecomastia doesn’t go away with weight loss. Even men who are on a strictly regimented diet and men with low body fat can still have excess breast tissue. Once the breast has developed, it does not involute; it does not shrink or go away on its own.”

It is not remediated by medication. It requires a surgical solution

The common method for treating gynecomastia is a mastectomy, but Dr. Vanek has a better way of treating the problem and creating the outcome you desire.

“I prefer to use VASER® Liposelection, which is a minimally invasive surgical therapy – it only requires two small incisions, and the results are permanent. It will provide the optimum skin contraction and a very masculine appearance,” explains Dr. Vanek, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. VASER® Liposelection, a technology first brought to Ohio by Dr. Vanek, uses precisely-tuned ultrasonic energy to melt fat without disrupting the surrounding tissue.

“VASER® reduces the level of surgical intervention and gives a much better outcome than the old subcutaneous mastectomy technique or the first- or second-generation ultrasonic liposuction. It’s even better than laser liposuction. The VASER® is the optimal tool for the treatment of gynecomastia.” In some cases, an extra incision is required to remove the fibrous breast tissue. “Think of it this way: The fat tissue of the chest is like Jell-O inside a Tupperware container, and the fibrous tissue is the fruit chunks at the bottom. I can liquefy the Jell-O with VASER®, but I can’t get the fruit out, so sometimes it takes an extra incision to remove that. The end result is a very natural masculine appearance,” says Dr. Vanek.

As with all his procedures, Dr. Vanek believes a great outcome begins with the consultation. During your consult, Dr. Vanek will educate you on the risks and benefits of any procedure and empower you to make an informed, medically sound decision. Based on your individual anatomy and your aesthetic goals, Dr. Vanek will create a series of treatment options to review with you. The consultation will allow Dr. Vanek to determine your candidacy for any procedure, so there is no need to decide on a definite course of action before you’ve consulted with Dr. Vanek. “No one can guarantee a great result, but if it’s an outcome that is possible, I will strive to achieve that outcome,” says Dr. Vanek.
